Selling to Plato’s Closet from the bins

Selling to Plato’s Closet from the bins

Resellers who often shop at the bins, not only can this be easily achievable but can quickly become your next income stream.

When it comes to selling to Plato’s Closet don’t focus on brands alone, but the styles you’re bringing in too. They don’t reject your item because it isn’t a great known brand but because the style isn’t it. Not everything you bring in has to be branded items. If you have the right current style, you have a good chance they’ll pay for it. Regardless of brand.

So, how should I be sourcing for Plato’s Closet? Let me give you a few tips I’ve gathered so I can make your next trip have a better outcome than your previous ones!

Getting a bigger payout

Importance of an Itemized receipt

Know what they need

MY own EXPERIENCE

My payout selling to Plato’s Closet consists between $60 to $90. I bring close to 30-40 items each time I go. Them accepting half of the items of 20 to 30 items. The payout ends up about $2 to $3 per piece.

Finding items to sell to Plato’s Closet doesn’t take much effort since most resellers at the bins toss aside these items because they don’t see the value or the resale isn’t there to justify picking it up but this where you sweep in and gather these items for a small cut. Adding no overload to you.

Understand YOUR Plato’s Closet needs?

First step to start maximizing your payout is to know what your own local plato’s closet is looking for.

It’s important to ask the employees directly what they are in need of.  If you’re not a talker. Like me, no worries! They usually have some sign upfront where they write in what brands/styles they’re looking for right now. Just like these below.

These boards are from two different Plato’s Closets.  Both looking for the same items. One highlighting more on brands & the other being more specific about what they’re looking for and what they don’t accept.

It’s important to get inside your local Plato’s Closet to get an idea what your exact store is buying & what you don’t see much of as a sign to stay away from to avoid bringing in future rejects.

don’t just focus on brands alone, style matters just as much

Plato’s Closet does want and prefer known branded pieces but if you have items that are in today’s style regardless if it’s not a “popular” brand they will buy it from you.

Here’s a few ways to expand your payout with not so great brands.

I’m sure you’ve seen your local Plato’s Closet filled with dupes. Like the Lululemon scrub jackets or like the free people jumpsuits. They accept these items knowing it’s not the actual brand but because the style has become popular alone. Any dupes of high retail styles with the similar look seem to be accepted.

To guarantee your item getting bought is to simply bring it in the right season. Themed prints related to the season or holiday (ex. February-hearts print sweater) (October-graphic hoodies/sweatshirts of halloween horror theme or movies or fall theme). Holiday themed, yes, weather appropriate, yes.

In case you have trouble sourcing for your own local Plato’s Closet browse your location and if your location has a social account check that out too.

Plato’s Closet LOVES Fast Fashion brands

Edikted, Cider, Misguided, H&M, Zara and yes even SHEIN. These brands almost always get bought out. Fashion Nova is kind of tricky. I’ve seen a hold back so unless it’s a really popular style. I wouldn’t pick it up much.I know as resellers these are brands to stay away from because the resale isn’t it, but Plato’s Closet will for sure pick these up. These brands are always up to date in style and keep up with newest trends. Picking up these brands is a sure way to build up your payout.

Mens Items Are Always Needed, since they aren’t brought in as much, they will LOVE you.

For mens clothing they are more brand selective but willing to buying more since they seem to be understocked at times. Styles I’ve noticed get accepted is athletic wear & the comfy lounge style . Choosing the right style to bring in during the right season like hoodies & flannels for the fall & winter. Shorts & tanks for the warm weather. Although some mens clothing sometimes are accepted throughout the year. Ex, shorts, sweatshirts.

Following your local Plato’s Closet on their social media can give you a better inside look on what exactly they do take.

Whether it’s their facebook, instagram, Tik Tok. In their instagram stories or Facebook posts they have the clothes shown and the prices mentioned. This gives you an idea on what your exact store will price them at. If they priced it at $4 then it’s probably $1 payout and if they price an item close to $20 then the payout is probably close to $5-$8. Since you get 20%-30% of what they”ll price it at in store.

I’ve recently seen Tik Tok accounts of Plato’s Closet employees doing videos of “Buy a buyout with me”. It’s short content on what they accept & what they reject. I love these content videos because it gives a chance to see what they like so you can start picking up similar pieces and get a different view of what Plato’s Closet picks up. It’s worth giving a follow to your local Plato’s Closet to help you better understand what your exact location is looking for in the moment.

Hold up! Checkout these details before heading over to sell to Plato’s Closet

I would consider giving a follow to your location’s social media account for any pop up notices. In case they are backed up of buyouts for the day or if they’re closed for a while. Believe me, my plato’s closet has turned me away a few times because either the computer system was down or late openings/early closing. An accident happened where they had to close for a few months and gave a notice on their account when they would open. Gif frustrating image

Here’s a receipt of what Plato’s Closet has paid me to give you a better look on what the overall payout looks like

When selling to Plato’s Closet it’s very important to ask for an itemized receipt.

I know some Plato’s closets no longer can give you a receipt but if they do they seem to only print what they took, not including the prices but sure, maybe sometimes a full itemized receipt, but probably not. Location can vary.

My location has stopped doing that so they just give a receipt with how many items they took and my total payout. Which was $2.89 per piece.

But it’s worth a try check out your location and mention the itemized receipt before accepting the buyout. The employees will say they can’t print it out anymore because the info has already been logged in, so make sure to ask before accepting the offer. This receipt is your biggest help! You’ll know what your exact location is paying for your items and what will be worth bringing in next time.

Manifesting your next Plato’s Closet buyout will be more than your previous ones. Let me know if you tried out any of these tips and how much was your payout! I’m curious to know!
